I love this quote. It so beautifully verbalizes how I feel about what I’m about to say on that one thing that might be missing. Wait for it…Meditation. I know, if you follow me on IG or FB you know this is part of my daily routine, you may even not want to hear about it (and if that is the case I ask you to get curious about that). I’m telling you hands down this is one item in my day that comes before anything else. Well most days, some days I get it in later. I’m human friends.
This time of year, things can get crazy and overwhelming. Nothing can bring you back to the present moment (you see overwhelming lives outside the present moment) like focusing on your breath. You may be thinking, but Liz…I have this and this and this and this to do. And that’s exactly why you need to stop, meditate, and Swim in that silence.
I want you to know I get it. I’ve been there. That heightened state of stress. Where sometimes I would realize I wasn’t even taking a breath. It can be scary to think about sitting still and meditating. I know. It freaked me out. I’m a constant mover. Have been since the day I was born. But that’s just a story I would tell myself to not sit still. So, I started out super small. Baby action steps. 1 min. Then up to 5 mins. And up I went. That was over 2 years ago when I was introduced and invited to try meditation by my two amazing friends and coaches Jess and Bj, Yogitriathlete.
So I invite you. Invite you to take a deep breath and do this thing that will change your life. Yes, I’m willing to say that. This one thing that had been missing has in fact changed my life. All areas. Especially my work with my athletes, interacting with my family and my training. And most amazingly keeps pushing me towards me.
Is it easy? Well, that depends on your mindset. It is simple – although the mind may say differently. And you definitely won’t need a special outfit, a new pair of shoes, or a special pillow. You will only need a willingness to sit. The pot will get stirred for sure. Yet, that’s what we need to move into who we really are; unique and amazing humans.
I know what you are thinking. This all sounds great but how the hell do I do it? Well, lucky for you I am here to give you that initial baby action step. You see real change takes place when you take action in the present moment.
Start here: Take 5 deep breaths. Inhale slowly, feel it enter your lungs and go all the way down deep into your belly. Then feel that pause right before you exhale. Now, exhale nice and slow and longer than the inhale. Then feel that pause right before you inhale again. Repeat at least 5x.
You can do these any time: before you get out of bed, driving to drop-off or pick up kids, before your workout, at your desk at work…any time.
